What type of tile can I use for a fireplace?
Any tile can be used on the face of a fireplace. It’s not recommended, however, to install the tiles directly in the firebox.
What is a sealer?
A sealer cures as a film on the stone surface. Since the material is actually covering the stone, the appearance of the stone surface may be altered by the application of this type of product. This material will provide somewhat of a layer over the stone, and will absorb most of the wear on the flooring. Since the sealer is softer than the stone, normal use of the flooring will result in abrasion of the sealer surface. Reapplication is necessary to maintain the original luster of the surface.
General Precautions: When any surface protection product is used, care must be taken to read and follow the manufacturer’s written instructions accurately. This will provide the greatest benefit from the application and will guarantee safe handling of the product.
How long will tile floor last?
If you are going for a classic look that you want to enjoy for decades, tile is definitely the right choice. Most types of porcelain and ceramic tile floors can last upwards of 50 years.
Should I choose glazed or unglazed for my wet areas?
Glazed tiles tend to work well in kitchens and baths because of their durability. They also come in a variety of patterns and colors so they are a great option.
Do you have a large selection of tiles to choose from?
Yes. We carry a wide range of ceramic, porcelain, and natural stone tiles. Our friendly staff is always happy to help you weed through the options to find what works best for your space and function.
What are examples of natural stone products?
Granite, Marble, Onyx, and Travertine are examples of Natural Stone Products.
Can ceramic tile be used outdoors?
To be used outdoors, we recommend the tile be frost-proof and unglazed for floor use. Make sure the absorption rate is 0.5% or less.
What is a PEI rating and what does it mean?
PEI Rating – This rating system, developed by the Porcelain Enamel Institute, is the most effective means to determine the suitability of a particular ceramic or porcelain tile for its intended use. The rating system indicates a tile’s resistance to abrasion and likelihood to wear under use. The PEI ratings are as follows:
- PEI I – tile has lowest wear resistance and is suitable for wall use only
- PEI II – tile has low wear resistance and is suitable for wall use and for floor areas with light traffic such as residential bathrooms
- PEI III – tile has moderate wear resistance and is suitable for all residential uses and in commercial areas where light to moderate foot traffic is anticipated
- PEI IV – tile has high wear resistance and is suitable for all residential uses and all medium commercial and light industrial uses
- PEI V – tile has highest wear resistance and is suitable for all residential, commercial and industrial uses
What is the difference between ceramic tile and porcelain tile?
All ceramic tiles are made from clay and kiln-fired. Porcelain tiles are a specific kind of ceramic tile, made from a specific kind of clay. Whereas most ceramic tiles are made from red or white clay, porcelain tiles are made from a light-colored clay with a slightly different chemical composition. Porcelain clay, when fired at high temperatures, creates a tile that is more durable and more moisture-resistant than other ceramic tiles.
Can I pick up tile the same day?
In most cases, yes. We have the largest in-house inventory of tile for sale. Most of what we carry will be available for immediate pick-up. While we have a large selection, there may be times when a custom tile must be ordered.
How do I clean my natural stone tiles?
Soaps and detergents can leave a residue. The best cleaning method for stone surfaces is to use a pH neutral stone cleaner such as Laticrete. (insert link here: https://laticrete.com/en/tile-and-stone-care-and-maintenance)
You can also use a mild liquid dishwashing detergent and warm water. Use a clean rag mop on floors and a soft cloth for other surfaces for the best results. Too much cleaner or soap can leave a film and cause streaks. Do not use products that contain lemon, vinegar, or other acids on marble or limestone. Do not use scouring powders or creams; these products contain abrasives that may scratch the surface. Rinse the surface thoroughly after washing with the soap solution and dry with a soft cloth.
Should a sealer be used on ceramic tile?
A glazed tile is already stain-proof, so there is no purpose to putting on a sealer. You may put a penetrating sealer on your unglazed tile or your grout joints. The penetrating sealer is an invisible, stain resistant shield that is absorbed into the surface.
What is the difference between glazed and unglazed tile?
Glazed tile has a non-porous coating added to the tile after it has been fired. Unglazed tiles have no additional coating.
